Short News Items from 1929

Several charming luncheon parties were held at the Samovar Friday, March 8. Mrs. G.H. Milne of New York City has as her guests Dr. Rorick Bennett, Mrs. George Rorick Clarke and Mrs. S.K. Porter of South Pasadena, and Mrs. Willard O. Waters of San Marino. (South Pasadena Foothill Review, March 15, 1929)

Eugene Groover, of Lapeer and Glenn Groover were down Sunday to eat dinner with Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Kessell and to help little Marshall Eugene Groover celebrate his birthday. He carried his cak[e] to the table with three lighted candles on it. Mrs. Groover returned home with them feeling much improved. (Oxford Leader, March 29, 1929)

Short News Items from 1924

Mrs. F.T. Sullivan entertained a few friends Tuesday at a turkey dinner honoring her mother, Mrs. E.H. Rorick, on her seventieth birthday anniversary. Covers were laid for Mrs. Lewis Converse, Mrs. M.C. Rorick and Mrs. Will Rorick of Morenci, Mrs. W.O. Ford, Mrs. G.H. Crane and Mrs. W.L. Knoff. (Adrian Daily Telegram, February 22, 1924)

Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Bunch, accompanied by the latter’s sister Mrs. Marion Bunch left for Medford Friday for a few days’ visit.  While there Mrs. Bunch will consult an eye specialist. They made the trip in their touring car and will return Sunday. (Klamath News, April 15, 1924)

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Groover spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Cassius Sutton of Hunters Creek. (Oxford Leader, May 2, 1924)

Former Resident Dies

Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Sylvester Porter of South Pasadena, Calif., which occurred January 14.  She is survived by a granddaughter who lives in New York City and two nieces Mrs. Georgia Clark and Mrs. Willard Watters [sic] both of Pasadena.  Mrs. Porter was born near Morenci and lived here the greater part of her life.  Mr. Porter died several years ago.

Former Resident Dies

Mrs. Bessie Waters, a former resident, died in Pasadena, California, Monday, October 6.  Mrs. Waters was the youngest daughter of the late Dr. C.T. Bennett and LaVina [sic] (Rorick) Bennett of Morenci. Mrs. Georgia Clark, of Pasadena, survives her sister.

Dr. Lavinia Rorick-Bennett Dies at Home in Pasadena

Word has been received here by relatives of the death of Dr. Lavinia Rorick-Bennett, which occurred Monday morning in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Willard Waters, at South Pasadena, Calif. Dr. Bennett was 88 years of age and had been ill only a few days.

She was very well known here and spent the greater part of her life in Morenci.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. S.K. Porter, two daughters, Mrs. Willard Waters and Mrs. George Clark, all of South Pasadena, two nephews, E.E. Spear and G.H. Rorick of this place, two nieces, Mrs. Albert Foster of Toledo and Mrs. Henry Crane of Fayette.

Funeral services have not yet been learned.

Obituary

Sylvester King Porter was born in Seneca Township, Lenawee county, Michigan, July 8th., 1847 and died February 3rd., 1929 in South Pasadena, California.

He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Porter, pioneers of the section in which he was born and where he spent the greater part of his life as a successful farmer.

In 1868 he was married to Miss Melissa Rorick, and the families of Porter and Rorick entered into further matrimonial alliances when his sisters, Miss Mary and Miss Harriet, became the wives of Mr. Mark Rorick and Mr. Roy Rorick respectively. These brothers were cousins of Mrs. S.K. Porter.

Mrs. Harriet Rorick entertained at dinner Saturday for the pleasure of her guests, Dr. and Mrs. W.D. Murphy of Columbus, O. Places were marked for Mr. and Mrs. S.K. Porter, Dr. Rorick Bennett and Mrs. Georgia Clark of Pasadena, Calif., Mrs. George Milne and daughter, Miss Margaret, of New York City, Mrs. Earl Baldwin, Mrs. George Crane and Mrs. F.L. [sic] Sullivan of Fayette, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Rorick of Adrian, Mrs. Mary Rorick, Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Spear and daughter, Margaret, Mrs. C.H. Spear, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Rorick and daughters, Harriet and Jean, Dr. and Mrs. Murphy, and the hostess, Mrs. Rorick.

Rorick Family Reunion

The Rorick family—with many branches, famed in local annals, true and staunch clansman—held its annual reunion Wednesday with Dr. E.H. Rorick, ex-member of the Ohio legislature and for some years connected with state institutions for the insane and feeble-minded, now living in more or less retirement at his beautiful Fayette home. It is a delightful place for such a meeting, and noted for hospitality. The Roricks had one of their characteristic good times—no formalities, just visiting, with the inevitable jokes and stories—and a plentitude of picnic provisions. His rubicund face and snowy hair, giving him patriarchal dignity, were continually in evidence and his sunny smile kept up the lively cheer of his kindred and friends.

The Rorick family reunion was held at the home of Cosper Rorick, sr., on “Rorick Avenue”—East Main street—Morenci.  About seventy-five representatives of the family sat down to a bountiful dinner, which, owing to the uncertain weather, was served in the spacious barn, especially prepared and decorated for the occasion.  No set program was followed, but the time was spent in conversation and good cheer.  Those present from out of town were Hon. and Mrs. E.H. Rorick, of Athens, O., Hon. and Mrs. J.C. Rorick, of Wauseon, and their granddaughter, Misses Ada and Cleantha McConnell, of Adrian; Mrs. Dr. Rorick Bennett, of Detroit, and her daughters, Mrs. Clark and Miss Bessie Bennett. It was decided to hold the next reunion at the home of Mark Rorick.  Noticeable among the decorations were beautiful hot house roses from Athens.

Double Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebrated

MORENCI, Aug. 23.—The celebration Thursday of the double golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. S.K. Porter of this place and Dr. and Mrs. Estelle [sic] Rorick of Fayette was an event of more than passing interest. The celebration of the golden anniversary by one couple is quite a common occurrence, but that the four people who were wedded by the same ceremony 50 years ago, August 22, 1868, should live to celebrate the double anniversary is a rare incident.
