Ralph W. (Duke) Millard, 67, retired business manager of The Fresno Bee, died today in a local hospital. It is believed his death was due to a heart attack. An autopsy has been ordered.
Millard, who retired from The Bee in 1959, had been living in Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County.
He entered the hospital last night and died at 7:30 o’clock this morning.
A native of Stillwater, Okla., Millard had a long career in the newspaper field. He attended high school in Long Beach and was a veteran of World War I.
He served as advertising manager of The Bee from 1928 to 1942 and was business manager from 1942 to 1959. Previously he was national advertising manager of the Phoenix Republic-Gazette, advertising manager of the Long Beach Press Telegram, and worked for the Long Beach Examiner.
Miller was past president of the University Sequoia-Sunnyside Club and was a member of Las Palmas Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters and the Fresno Elks Lodge. He formerly was a member of the Fresno Rotary Club.
Surviving are his former wife, Mrs. Jessie Walling Millard of Fresno; a son, Ralph W. Millard, a Fresno State College student; three daughters, Mary Linda Millard of Cayucos, Mrs. Rachael Pattillo, Lubbock, Tex., and Mrs. Beverly Hiatt of Claremont, Los Angeles County. There are eight grandchildren.
The Lisle Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
